Top 5 homestead podcasts you need to subscribe to!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t always have time to sit down and read a blog post. No matter how good it is. We mamas always have a million things on the go, don’t we! And so I’ve become a huge fan of listening to podcasts. This way I can listen while I’m doing the dishes or folding the laundry (I swear I do both of those things! Honest 😉  )

If you have a nosey around the interwebs, you’ll be able to find podcasts on almost any topic. I could go on for hours. But I promise I won’t. Instead, I will simply share with you my  FIVE Favourite Homesteading Podcasts.

Homesteading Podcasts

Permaculture Realised

This one is a treasure trove to explore! Put out by the folks at Realeyes Homestead, expert guests pop in to chat about all aspects of permaculture within the context of homesteading. There are 26 episodes available so far and I can’t wait for more.

Melissa K Norris

What this girl doesn’t know about canning just isn’t worth knowing. With 90 episodes so far, and a new one out every Friday, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here for you to take advantage of. Melissa takes a back-to-basics approach to homesteading. Everything comes back to connecting with pioneering routes, being frugal and efficient, and finding joy in the simple acts of caring for and feeding your family. If you only have time for one podcast in your life, make sure it’s this one. You won’t be sorry.

Urban Farm

The guys from Urban Farm play host to this regular podcast. There is a new episode every few days so you will never run out! All kinds of guests drop by to chat about their particular area of skill and experience. There are country folks and city folks. Small and large scale growers. Whether you are dreaming of starting out, or are ready to go next level with your homesteading endeavours, you will find something here. Don’t miss checking out this one.

Modern Homesteading

Growing. Preserving. Animal care. This one runs the gamut of modern homesteading topics. I love how positive Harold is. He always encourages you to just get in there and do what you can with what you have available to you. And as an Aussie, I am intrigued by his squirrel hunting podcasts 😉

The Frugal Chicken

Surely you knew I wouldn’t be able to go past adding in a podcast dedicated to all things chicken! Bock, bock, bock. Maat is so knowledgeable about chickens and covers everything from chicken health, to what to feed your girls, to getting your hens helping you out in the garden. If you have chickens scratching around in your backyard then you won’t want to leave this one off your list.

Ok! Ok! I know I said 5, but I couldn’t resist adding in just one more truly special podcast for you…

The Greening of Gavin

Finishing up with a fabulous Australian podcast! This one is officially retired. Sad, I know. But Gavin has left us with a staggering 132 podcasts to listen to. And if you get to the end and are missing him, I am informed he has another blog as well as a youtube channel (you can find the links on The Greening of Gavin blog). Gavin covers all sorts of topics to make your life a little greener, and the future a little brighter for our children. The perfect podcast for those of us in the suburbs just trying to do what we can to make the world, and our homes, a better place to live. And just quietly, I would love to go to one of his cheesemaking workshops one day *hint hint husband*

Do you listen to podcasts? I’d love to know your favourites 🙂

  1. Is it weird I really like your flannel? I think homesteading girls (and guys) have a thing for flannels, or could just be me. lol
Thanks so much for including me in your round-up! And guess what I’m getting ready to do? Yep, can up some apple pie jam and venison stew this weekend (not really much of a surprise, I’m sure).
And I’m a podcast junkie so I’m excited to check out some of your picks.

    1. Haha thanks! It is a cheapie I’ve had for years but I love it. Can’t be homesteading without one 😉
Apple pie jam sounds amazing! I don’t think it’s a thing here in Australia so I hope you put up a recipe I can try 🙂
Enjoy discovering some new podcasts x
