Not to toot my own horn, but folks tend to go a little cray over my tomato sauce. I’ve been told it’s the best condiment around. Until now! Move over tomato sauce. There’s a new, smokier, favourite in town. And I’m sharing it with you! You’re welcome 😉
Ingredients for the Best BBQ Sauce
1 half batch of homemade tomato sauce (you can find my recipe here).
1 cup of molasses
2 tbsp smoked paprika
1 tbsp chili powder
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp celery powder
4 Simple Steps to Make Your Sauce
- Follow the 1st two steps in the recipe for tomato sauce above, remembering to halve the quantities (or substitute with your own homemade tomato sauce/ketchup recipe if you prefer). When you get to step 3, blitz your sauce smooth with a stick blender.
- Mix the remaining ingredients listed above in a jug and add to the tomato sauce. Stir well and return pot to the heat and bring to the boil
- Reduce to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes to reduce your sauce. While this is happening, wash your bottles in warm, soapy water, rinse clean and put into a warm oven to keep the glass hot. This prevents cracking when you add the sauce. Hot liquid into cold glass is a recipe for disaster.
- Once the sauce has reduced, ladle it into your prepared bottles and screw the lids on finger tight. If you want to waterbath your sauce for storage they take 30mins.
And that’s it! So simple, yet so delicious.
For a little something extra, try swapping out some of the tomatoes for the same weight in red capsicums (peeled, seeded and rough chopped) when you are making the tomato sauce base.
One more tip. Instead of throwing the tomato skins into the rubbish, or even into the compost, I dry them to make tomato powder. If you want to give it a try, you can find the directions here. Just substitute the tomato slices for your skins 🙂
